Blighted I. Brown Bros. building coming down on site of new Walgreen's

Work has started to demolish and clear the Kings Highway property where the long-vacant and deteriorating I. Brown Bros. furniture store stands, paving the way for a new Walgreen's pharmacy.

The site at 460 Kings Highway has been on the town's list of blighted properties for several years.

New owners in 2008 received zoning approval to build a retail/commercial building on the parcel, but that project did not move forward at the time.

Last February, however, the Town Plan and Zoning Commission issued a certificate of compliance for the project, which encompasses four different properties -- in addition to the furniture store site, including two other empty commercial buildings and a three-family house.

The new structure will encompass 14,000 square feet, and have 69 parking spaces -- more than the 57 required by town zoning regulations. The parking will be located on the Jennings Road side of the Walgreen's building, which will also have a drive-up window for prescription pickups. When the new building is completed, it is expected that the pharmacy chain will close its store in the nearby Villa Avenue shopping center anchored by a Super Stop & Shop.
