The driver of a car that burst into flames Sunday on an Interstate 95 entrance ramp in Southport escaped without injuries, according to firefighters.
The 2013 Volkswagen Golf caught fire on the northbound entrance ramp of I-95's Exit 19 interchange about 4 p.m., shutting down the ramp for about an hour.
The vehicle suffered extensive damage from the blaze, according to firefighters. The cause remains under investigation.
"The driver of the car was very lucky to have been able to safely stop the car and get out without getting burned or injured," Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson said in a statement issued after the fire.
