Brendan Sgaglione, 22, of Oldfield Road, was charged with driving under the influence and traveling unreasonably fast around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
An officer said Sgaglione drove past his cruiser on Kings Highway East at a high rate of speed. When the officer turned around to follow Sgaglione, he said it appeared the suspect accelerated. Several times, according to the report, Sgaglione's car straddled the road's two southbound lanes as he negotiated curves. Despite icy conditions, police said he was closed traveling at at 55 mph in a 35-mph zone.
When officers stopped him, they said Sgaglione appeared dazed and his eyes were glassy, and there was strong odor of alcohol. He also failed field sobriety tests, police said. In his pocket was a 2-ounce bottle of whiskey and several marijuana roaches were found in the car's ashtray, according to the report. There was a six-pack of cold beer, with four empty bottles, on the floor of the back seat, police said.
At headquarters, police said Sgaglione refused to answer questions or submit to breath analysis. He was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear Feb. 4 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
