A fire outside a gym Monday night was extinguished by firefighters before causing serious damage.
A member of Planet Fitness gym, 111 Black Rock Turnpike, reported the blaze in an alleyway separating the Tumble Gym from the former Schrier Brothers Paper Co. about 10 p.m.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were threatening to spread to the building, according to the fire report.
Fire crews Engine and Ladder 2, under direction of Lt. Dennis Eannotti, cut the lock on the gate, gained access and quickly extinguished the fire. Firefighters from Engine and Ladder 1, under direction of Lt. Robert Smith, entered the large warehouse and checked to make sure the fire had not spread.
Possible cause of the fire was work at the warehouse by employees of Connecticut Dismantling, who had recently halted operations at the building for the day, using cutting torches to remove steel pipes. Metal slag debris left by the welding was found at the site, according to the report.
Fire crews cleared the scene about three-quarters of an hour later, according to the Assistant Chief George Gomola, the incident commander.
