Many parents vehemently opposed the recent cuts to the proposed education budget in Fairfield. I was among those who repeatedly reached out to Representative Town Meeting members to make my voice heard. Yet despite receiving countless emails and hearing public comments from an overwhelming majority of parents stating their support for the budget, the RTM voted for the cuts anyway. Our pleading fell on deaf ears.
I live in District 5, and am disgusted that two of my representatives showed such blatant disregard for their constituents: Laurene O'Brien, the lone Democrat on the RTM to vote for the cuts, joined Republican Carol Way. Several Republicans in other districts did listen to the parents and voted against their party to support the budget as approved by the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance. How sad that the majority of Republican RTM members put party discipline above the concerns of their constituents.
I also learned recently that Fairfield's Republican state representatives sought to cut state education funding by $6 million. But I am glad to know that their efforts were unsuccessful. Listening is an important skill, especially for elected officials. Let's make sure they hear us loud and clear on Election Day.
