A Milford man, who police said drove onto a downtown sidewalk around 1 a.m. Sunday, was charged with driving under the influence.
An officer spotted the car driven by Mark Wittkofske, 23, driving at a high rate of speed west on the Post Road, near South Pine Creek Road, according to the report. At one point, two of the tires on Wittkofske's car were on the sidewalk, before he veered off, and then swerved back onto the road's shoulder, hitting a curb, police said.
Wittkofske, who lives on Eastern Parkway in Milford, allegedly told the officer, "Sorry, you scared me." According to the report, he told officers he had been at Stratford's fireworks show and was heading home to Milford, although he was driving in the opposite direction. He also said he'd only had one beer, according to the report.
Wittkofske failed field-sobriety tests, police said, and was also found in possession of marijuana and smoking pipes. In addition to DUI, he was charged with failure to drive right, possession of a controlled substance, possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was released on a promise to appear July 14 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
