The owners of Henry C. Reid & Son Jewelers plan to polish their downtown gem.
The French Family Realty Trust, LLC, owners of the building at 1591-1593 Post Road, have applied to the Town Plan and Zoning Commission to add a second story for 1,634 square feet of new retail space. The TPZ voted last week to send the application to a public hearing.
According to a statement of use from lawyer John Fallon representing the applicants, the new addition will include solar panels on the roof.
The Zoning Board of Appeals granted a variance to the owners June 5 allowing for a reduced minimum side setback in order to accommodate the second-floor addition.
"The board took note of the fact that the existing building as historically located on the site is nonconforming to the minimum setback from the side property" and the second floor will actually have a slightly larger setback -- 1.2 feet -- compared to the 1-foot setback of the existing building, Fallon said in the statement.
Other than that variance, Fallon said, the proposed addition will comply with all other zoning regulations, including coverage and parking.
"The proposed addition as designed by Peter Cummings is attractive, harmonizes with the character of the surrounding area and represents a significant aesthetic enhancement to the property benefitting the center designed business district," he said.
