Police think Robert Ortowski, 38, who was arrested Tuesday at the Super Stop & Shop on Kings Highway Cutoff, may be one of the gum and candy thieves that has hit both that grocery store and the Super Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue over the past week.
Ortowski, who was charged with sixth-degree larceny, was seen by store employees putting $140 worth of gum and candy into a black backpack, according to the report. He was arrested by police in the Dunkin' Donuts parking lot at the Post Road traffic circle.
Store employees said they recognized him from previous thefts, police said.
Ortowski, of Grove Street, Bridgeport, was released on a promise to appear May 27 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the theft of 71 packs of gum from the Villa Avenue store Monday, but was not reported until Tuesday.
Two other thefts of gum and candy were reported Thursday and Friday at the Villa Avenue store, and in one case, two men were recorded by the store's video surveillance cameras.
