'Wich sandwich? Plenty of choices at new Fairfield shop

The new sandwich shop 'Wich Day, 808 Post Road, is owned by a man who knows his way around ice cream -- and now he intends to provide Fairfielders with the rest of the meal.

Sergio Kreskin, the owner of five Sunnie Daes ice cream shops, including two in Fairfield, opened 'Wich Day last month. The fare at the new shop features hot and cold sandwiches, salads and breakfast items.

"We've had a good response -- it's getting busier and busier every day," he said.

Kreskin wasn't really planning to open a sandwich shop to add to his portfolio, but the space next to his Post Road Sunnie Daes opened up when a telephone store recently moved out -- and he couldn't resist.

"It's all about location," he said, pointing out that the sandwich shop, located at the busy corner of Post and North Benson roads is down the street from Fairfield University and on the way to the shoreline for many people. "Location ¦ location ¦ location ¦ is really what business is all about," he added.

The location of his four other Sunnie Daes ice cream stores are 2001 Black Rock Turnpike, Riverside Avenue in Westport, White Plains Road in Trumbull and Shippan Avenue in Stamford.

A Trumbull resident, Kreskin has been in the food business for 16 years. He's finding that the most popular items at 'Wich Day are the hot sandwiches: BBQ pulled pork, Philly cheese steak, grilled Buffalo chicken and four kinds of parmigiana (chicken, meatball, eggplant and sausage) among others. The grill is always on, he said, and everything is made to order from fresh ingredients -- nothing frozen or pre-cooked.

'Wich Day also offers eggs and omelets, as well as breakfast sandwiches and hot and cold drinks including cappuccino and iced coffee.

The business now is primarily a take-out restaurant with a few seats at the counter, and is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., but he plans to stay open later eventually, Kreskin said. And an incentive for 'Wich Day customers who spend $20 or more is a free ice cream cone at Sunnie Daes.

Does Kreskin plan to open more 'Wich Day shops to partner with his other ice cream stores?

"When I opened my second Sunnie Daes I said, `no more' ¦ But you never know."

'Wich Day, 808 Post Road, is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For information or to place an order, call 203-955-1888 or fax 203-955-1899.
