Two local teenage musicians who have gained regional and national prominence will be performing in a benefit concert for Pequot Library's music programs.
Nationally known pianist Alex Beyer, 19, of Fairfield, and solo vocalist, Katherine Waugh, 16, of Easton, will perform on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 8 to 10 p.m. in the library's concert space. They will perform individually and together.
Also appearing is the Rev. Alan Murchie, the organist and choirmaster at St. John's Church in Washington and the former director of music at Trinity Episcopal Church in the Southport section of Fairfield. He will play "piano four hands" with Beyer. Piano four hands is a form of piano duet, for a single piano with two players.
Beyer, a 2012 Fairfield Warde High School graduate, was the recipient of the Stamford Symphony Jeniam Foundation Instrumental Scholarship Award for 2012. Other first prize awards include the Renee Fischer Competition and the Music Teacher's National Association state and regional competitions. He was a 2011 MTNA finalist in the senior piano division and a finalist in the 2010 Milwaukee PianoArts competition. He is a 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and has performed and directed many benefit concerts.
Waugh is a sophomore at Joel Barlow High School in Redding. Although she also plays clarinet, tenor sax and piano, it is as a vocalist that Waugh excels. She will perform with the Western Regional High School Choir in January and is a soloist with the Fairfield County Children's Choir.
Waugh has been in demand as a national anthem vocalist for the NHL, the NBA, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Bluefish, and Cape Cod Firebirds. She has performed to raise money for Sandy Hook, Music for Youth and typhoon relief efforts in the Philippines.
Murchie is the former director of music and pastoral associate for Trinity Episcopal Church, Southport. He was also director of Music for St. James Church in New York City; and Christ Church, Rye, N.Y. Tickets for the Pequot Library concert are $25 at the door; $20 for advanced online sales and Pequot Library Association members. Students are $15.
