The Fairfield American Little League tournament team for 11 year olds, selected after the team that competed in the District 2 tournament earlier this summer, won its Cal Ripken Summer Xtreme league championship in late July.
Fairfield went 5-1 in the 11B division, and 6-4 overall in the league, during the regular season.
"We were not able to get enough games against 11B teams so we ended up playing 11A, 12B and 12A teams," said American manager Tim Boyle. "In those games, we never lost by more than two runs and beat one 12B team. The tougher competition ended up making us a much stronger team."
In the Xtreme playoffs, 11B teams had to join the 11A double-elimination tournament. Following a first-round loss to Norwalk 11A by 6-5, Fairfield was in the losers' bracket.
Fairfield American defeated Fairfield National 11B by 11-1 in four innings to stay alive in the tournament. Rowan Sullivan pitched a solid two innings and benefited from solid defense. Chris Domizio struck out two of the six batters he faced. Sullivan smacked a single to drive in the runs that sealed the mercy-rule victory in the bottom of the fourth.
Norwalk 11A eliminated the Americans 12-11 in the next game. Norwalk scored the winning run on a Fairfield error in extra innings. Domizio blasted a three-run homer to right field to keep the Americans close.
With all the 11B teams eliminated from the 11A playoffs, the top two 11B teams played for the division championship. Fairfield American beat Newtown 11-3 at Gould Manor on July 30. Fairfield and Newtown split their games against each other in the regular season, Boyle said.
Rowan Sullivan and Hunter Vogel each pitched three innings against Newtown. Sean Seiler cracked a three-run home run and Vogel slugged a solo homer in the Americans' five-run fifth inning that put the game out of Newtown's reach.
Fairfield American's tournament team of 11 year olds also participated in the Jeff Blueweiss Memorial Tournament at Unity Park in Trumbull during July. This tournament featured teams from Districts 1 and 2 that did not advance to the sectional tournaments.
Fairfield fielded the lone B team and earned wins over Westport and Trumbull National. Fairfield finished fifth of eight teams after pool play.
