Fairfield Warde senior Ahmed Hourani sustained his first heavyweight wrestling loss of the season on March 8 in the finals of the New England Championships in Providence, R.I. He lost by 5-3 to Jesse Webb, of Mt. Anthony Union in Bennington, Vt. Webb pinned Hourani for the 2013 title.
The Mustangs, who had two other wrestlers qualify for the regional championships, finished 10th as a team with 44 points, but second best among Connecticut schools behind runner-up Danbury (108), which was edged for first place by 13 points by Mt. Anthony (121).
Hourani, whose ultimate goal this season was to win the New England Championships, finished 2013-14 with a 46-1 record. His career record was 105-6 in three years on the Mustangs' varsity. He won heavyweight championships this winter at the FCIAC Championships, CIAC Class L and the State Open. Webb was ranked ninth in the country by Wrestling Insider Magazine on Jan. 30.
In the second round, after receiving a first-round bye, Hourani pinned David Crichton, of Windham, N.H., then he pinned Nicholas Crowle, of Fairfield Prep, in the quarterfinals. Hourani pinned John Lachowicz, of Hampshire, Mass., in the semifinals before meeting Webb in the finals.
Warde junior Daniel Ebert, who was third at the State Open on March 1, placed fourth at 126 pounds at the New Englands.
Ebert, the Class L champion on Feb. 22, went 4-2 in Providence to finish 2013-14 with a 45-5 record. Ebert beat Jordan Paecht, of Holliston, Mass., 15-4 in the first round, then Alex D'Aloisio, of Lincoln, R.I. 7-5 in the second round. Ebert defeated Sam Forman, of Lincoln-Sudbury, Mass., in sudden victory in the quarterfinals before losing to Cross Cannone, of Trumbull, in sudden victory in the semifinals.
In the consolation semifinals, Ebert lost to Nick Widmann, of John Stark (N.H.), 2-0 before being defeated by Jon Ryan, of Dracut (Mass.), 7-0 in the match to determine third place.
Kane, a freshman, went 1-2 at the New Englands to finish 40-5 on the season at 113 pounds. Kane was runner-up to Kyle Lindner, of New Milford, at the Class L and State Open championships. Kane lost his first-round match in Providence by injury default, then pinned Matt Kelley, of Foxboro, Mass., in the third round of the consolation bracket.
Kane's competition ended with a 6-2 loss to Peter DelGallo, of Gardiner, Maine, in the next round.
Hourani, Ebert and Kane each were named Male Athlete of The Week during the winter by the Fairfield Citizen sports department.
