STORRS -- Breanna Stewart had 19 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to lead top-seeded UConn to a 87-44 victory over No. 16 Prairie View A&M Sunday in the first round of the NCAA tournament before 5,018 at Gampel Pavilion.
The Huskies are seeking to become the first team in the history of the sport to win nine national championships.
The Huskies (35-0) will meet ninth-seeded St. Joseph's (23-9) in the second round of the Lincoln Region on Tuesday at 7 p.m.. Led by 18 points (4-of-6 3-pointers) and seven rebounds from senior guard Erin Shields, the Hawks defeated eighth-seeded Georgia 67-57 in first game Sunday.
It was first tournament win for St. Joseph's since defeating Texas 69-48 in the first round in 2000.
Bria Hartley finished with 16 points, three rebounds and four assists for UConn. Moriah Jefferson added 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals while Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had with 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Stefanie Dolson contributed 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
LaReahn Washington scored 13 points to lead Prairie View (14-18).
STAR OF THE GAME: Stewart. She had 19 points (8-of-17 FG), 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 28 minutes. She has 11 double-doubles this season.
