A budding nutrition franchise is one of the original tenants at a new plaza in Brookfield.
Foundation Rx has opened at 540 Federal Road, at the entrance to the new Oak Meadows townhouse development. Foundation Rx opened last month and offers vitamins, supplements and other products for healthy living.
“You don’t even have to be an athlete. If your doctor suggests you take something for health, we’ll have it for you,” said Erik Padilla, an owning partner with Foundation Rx. “We’re here to help out people and lead them in the right direction. That’s why we are successful. We don’t just sell, sell, sell. We want to talk with you and get to know you so we can help you more.”
Padilla, 25, said the store sells at wholesale prices because the business partners consider the internet its main competition.
Retail sales of vitamins and nutritional supplements has grown steadily over the last 12 years and reached $36.1 billion in 2017, according to the statistics portal website Statista. Retail chain Vitamin World, however, declared bankruptcy last year and closed several locations, including those in Danbury and Trumbull.
“The fitness industry is really big,” Padilla said.

Other Foundation Rx stores are in Meriden, Orange and Carmel, N.Y. The original location, formerly known as Doc’s Nutrition Depot, is in Carmel and was founded by Danbury resident Anthony Bisignano. The business partners changed the name and logo of the business to better reflect evolving demographics of fitness. The former logo featured a bodybuilder.
“We had to go with the new look because we want everyone to feel comfortable coming in,” Bisignano said. “It’s not just for bodybuilders, but for everyone. It’s a lifestyle store.”
Bisignano has been in the nutrition industry for 23 years. Padilla started working for Bisignano in Carmel five years ago. Padilla, who attended a community college and then City University of New York, worked up to store manager and now owning partner with Bisignano and Ray O’Connell. Padilla will manage the Brookfield store.
“I just got this opportunity. I never thought I’d be a business owner, but I’m good at this and enjoy it. I also love working out, so I thought why not,” Padilla said. “I’ve learned a lot from Anthony from just being around him and hearing him talk about it.”
Padilla and Bisignano said growing Foundation Rx into a big franchise is the long-term goal of the owners. Bisignano said they hope to have 15 locations by the end of 2019.
“We want to take over the Northeast,” Padilla said. “We want everyone to know Foundation Rx."
Bisignano added: “They’ll all have a clean, comfortable feel with reasonable pricing and an appreciation for customers. It’s hard to find that now, but we all live this.”Read Full Article
Padilla said he hopes to add low-carb and healthy pre-made meals to the Brookfield location soon. Foundation Rx offers the meals at its Carmel store.
Bisignano said the partners were attracted to the new plaza because of its proximity to several gyms and busy retail corridors.
“I had a good feeling about it,” he said. “It’s an up-and-coming area. It will do fantastic. It’s a matter of people getting to know us and where we are.”
Foundation Rx will hold a grand opening event in August. The First Bite, a catering business that recently opened in the plaza, will hold a grand opening event at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
