Warde rolls past Ludlowe 55-22

FAIRFIELD — When you consider that Warde lost its starting quarterback in the offseason via a transfer, suffered several key injuries and had to adjust players and positions throughout the year, a .500 season would have been out of the question, right?

Tyler Llewellyn scored four touchdowns, accounted for 181 yards of total offense and the Mustangs finished at 5-5 after overwhelming town-rival Ludlowe 55-22 before an estimated crowd of 2,800 at Taft Field.

“Considering the extent of the injuries we had, to play the schedule we played, I’m happy,” Warde coach Duncan DellaVolpe said. “I wish we could have one more game, but this is how we wanted to finish going into next year. I told this team that they are a special group.”

Llewellyn scored on runs 44, 2 and 1 yards and also caught a 61-yard pass from quarterback Matt Cerminaro. Will Stearns caught TD passes of 7 and 40 yards from Cerminaro as the Mustangs scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to win going away.

“It feels great. It means so much to beat these guys. This rivalry means so much to us,” said Llewellyn, who rushed for 120 yards and also caught a pass for 61 yards. “We just had a great game plan and we executed it all day.”

This was the 43rd meeting between the two schools dating back to 1956. Ludlowe leads the overall series 24-17-1. It was the 23rd time the teams have played on Thanksgiving. Warde leads that series 14-8.

Ludlowe, which snapped an 18-game losing streak earlier in the season, ended 1-9 under new coach Mitch Ross.

“It’s one win, but it’s being competitive in every game,” Ross said. “It’s much more than the one win. We need to get more kids out, we need more depth and we have to get stronger.”

The Falcons were guilty of four interceptions, two of which led to Warde touchdowns.

“We lost the turnover battle,” Ross said. “You can’t win games when you lose the turnover battle and we lost it badly. That’s the story of the game. We got killed in the turnovers.”

It took just two plays for Warde to get on the board as Llewellyn took a pitch, raced to the right and was off the races, going 44 yards to score.

“Coach told me ‘buck-toss right’ ‘buck toss-left’ the first two plays and we scored on them,” Llewellyn said. “My offensive line did a great job, they were opening hole for me all day, we just had a great game plan and we executed it all day.”

The Mustangs used three touchdown passes from quarterback Matt Cerminaro to Stearns and the 61-yard strike to Llewellyn — to offset a Kevin Quinn 3-yard scoring run for Ludlowe as Warde took a 27-7 halftime lead.

Michael Logan caught a 24-yard TD pass and Kevin Quinn grabbed a 60-yard strike in the fourth quarter for Ludlowe while Warde got touchdowns from Cerminaro (4-yard run), Jack Curtis (37-yard pass) and Llewellyn (2- and 1-yard runs).

“For me, it’s great,” DellaVolpe said. “I love playing on Thanksgiving. It’s a great rivalry and you never want to lose and anytime you can beat the cross-town rival, it special.”

Warde’s Tyler Llewellyn. He scored four touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving. He rushed for 120 yards and caught a pass for 61 yards.

“(Tyler) did a little bit of everything. He can do it all. He’s going to be an exciting player to watch at the next level. He missed three games for us but I’m proud of him. He got it done today.” — Warde coach Duncan DellaVolpe on Tyler Llewellyn
