Demagogue: Senator Joe McCarthy and Trump

Back in the early 1950s, Sen. Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin was so reckless and ruthless in his attacks on people he accused of being communists that his name stuck as a word - McCarthyism - which means mounting political attacks based on lies and guilt by association. Less well known is how Connecticut senators mounted a fight against McCarthy, and how there’s a direct line between McCarthy and President Donald Trump.

New York Times Bestselling Author Larry Tye’s biography, “Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy,” is just out from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, based partly on the first ever examination of McCarthy’s long-sealed personal papers.

Hearst Connecticut Media Columnist Dan Haar will talk with Tye about the book this Monday, July 13, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Crowdfest, through the House of Books in Kent. Click here to join the discussion.
