Fairfield PAL fishing derby reels in young anglers

Fairfield's fishin' hole was officially open for business Saturday, and the day's sunny, warm skies reeled in a crowd of young anglers for the annual Fairfield Police Athletic League's trout derby at Gould Manor Park.

"We got a lot of kids and it's a fantastic day," said lead organizer Officer Scott Sudora about the turnout and weather for the springtime event, which has been held more than 50 years.

The PAL derby is open to children 3 to 15 years old. Proceeds help fund PAL's family-friendly activities across town, including the Sandcastle Contest every summer.

Organizers on Friday evening had stocked the park's pond with 361 trout.

Frank Onder, a retired Fairfield police sergeant and the PAL treasurer, said, "This is a great family time and always gets a good crowd."
