The Fairfield YMCA is hosting Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 26, as part of the Y's national initiative to improve family health and well-being. The event includes games, healthy cooking demonstrations and arts and crafts to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home. Healthy Kids Day is free and takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fairfield YMCA, 841 Old Post Road.
The event, celebrated at nearly 1,600 Ys across the country, aims to get more kids moving and learning, so they can keep up the habit all summer long -- a critical out-of-school time for kids' health, according to information provided by the YMCA. Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, children fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during summer as during the school year.
The Fairfield Y is also offering several day camps this summer. A summer camp open house will take place Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All branches of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA offer financial assistance for summer camp for those in need.
