The Fairfield County Sports Commission announced its 2018 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 16 communities the commission directly serves. The local sports honorees will be recognized at the 14th annual Sports Night awards dinner, Monday, Oct. 15, at the Stamford Marriott at 6 p.m.
In each of the 16 towns, a committee headed by a local town representative of the commission selected a Sports Person of the Year. Each winner was deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from August 2017-August 2018.
The Sports Persons of the Year are:
Bridgeport: Larry Menta, Middle school basketball coach & physical education teacher; Darien: Darien High baseball team, FCIAC champions; Easton: Barlow High girls tennis team, Class M state champions; Fairfield: Tyler Nelson, Fairfield University all-time leading basketball scorer; Greenwich: Greenwich High girls volleyball team, FCIAC & Class LL state champions; Monroe: Masuk High softball team, undefeated Class L state champions ; New Canaan: Harry Stanton, Division 3 National Lacrosse Tourney MVP for champ Wesleyan; Newtown: Sarah Houle, State girls high school golf champion, CT Jr. PGA winner; Norwalk: Joe Madaffari, National High School Athletic Director of the Year; Shelton: Reid Chavez, Shelton High record-setting swimmer; Stamford: Andrea O'Connor, Stamford High volleyball & basketball star; Stratford: Ryan Duffy, Stratford High cross country standout, aided injured fellow runner; Trumbull: Jillian Rice, Bryant University swimmer, school's female co-athlete of the year; Weston: Gary Meunier, Weston High Boys' tennis coach; Westport: Julia Marino, U.S. Olympic snowboarder; Wilton: Wilton High wrestling program.
With the 16 new honorees, the FCSC has honored a total of 215 local sports persons.
The Fairfield County Sports Commission is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, charitable and educational organization dedicated to promoting youth fitness and an active, healthy lifestyle, as well as personal development through sports. The commission, which is an all-volunteer organization except for the executive director position, is the one-stop resource for the sports communities in the county.
