Walgreen's proposes new pharmacy on Southport stretch of Post Road

A Walgreen's pharmacy that now does business just over Fairfield's western border on Post Road East in Westport wants to move to new quarters in Fairfield.

The retailer and Best Invest KHW SPT, LLC, have submitted an application to the Town Plan and Zoning Commission to build a freestanding outlet on property on the Post Road between the Twice is Nice consignment shop and the new site of Garelick & Herbs gourmet food store, which last year won approval to relocate from Westport. The site comprises property at 3553-3571 Post Road and 886 Kings Highway West.

The manager of the LLC, according to the Secretary of the State's office, is former Selectman Sherri Steeneck.

The 9,000-sqaure-foot Walgreen's store would include a drive-through window for prescriptions, and according to the statement of use submitted to the TPZ, the building's design "will reflect historic architecture found in the Southport area of Fairfield."

Though the 30-foot-high building might appear as though it is two stories tall, according to the plans, it would be one story high.

The TPZ voted last week to send the application to a public hearing, but Assistant Planning Director James Wendt said that hearing will likely not take place before August.

"A robust landscaping plan is also proposed," according to the application, along with improved pedestrian safety and access in the area that will "dramatically improve this site from both aesthetic and quality-of-life perspectives."

Two of the lots where the project is proposed were the site of two residential homes that had been the subject of blight complaints, and have since been demolished.

Walgreen's seeks to change the zone of three of the properties. One parcel is zoned design industrial, and two others are both design industrial and residence B. The fourth is zoned design commercial and the applicant is asking that all of the parcels be changed to design commercial. The four lots combined are a total of 1.065 acres, according to the application.
