Funds pouring in for Shelton woman killed in Trumbull crash

SHELTON — The community has rallied behind the family of Jessica Kozlowski, who died following a major crash last week on Route 25 south.

The 38-year-old mother of two died on the afternoon of Jan. 10 after her car veered left off Route 25 just by Exit 6 in Trumbull and she struck a rock structure on the median, according to an accident report by Connecticut State Police.

After the crash, which caused the airbags in Kozlowki’s vehicle to deploy, she was transported to Bridgeport Hospital with life-threatening injuries, state police said. She was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m.

Kozlowki’s vehicle was towed from the crash site and the cause remains under investigation.

By Monday, just a few days after the deadly crash, a friend of the Kozlowskis set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the woman’s funeral expenses.

The page was created by Bridgeport firefighters Jesse Seto. He called the “tragic accident ... just about one of the worst things that can happen in life.”

He said Jessica Kozlowski was the wife of fellow Bridgeport firefighter James Kozlowski.

“We would like to help Jimmy navigate through this very difficult time while also learning to live life as a single parent to two young children, anything you can do to help alleviate this sudden financial burden would be amazing and truly appreciated,” Seto said.

According to Seto, the Kozlowskis have two sons, James Jr. and Jacob.

By Tuesday afternoon, more than 400 donors had raised $31,952.

In an obituary for Jessica Kozlowski, it identified her as a Shelton resident.

The obituary said Kozlowski was born on Sept. 9, 1981, to James E. and Joanna Baldino Zavodjancik of Bridgeport.

“Jessica's love for all children led to a nearly 14 year career as a registered nurse at Pediatric Healthcare Associates of Fairfield, where she built many lasting relationships,” the obituary said.

It said her “greatest enjoyment” was found in spending time with her children, “who were the most important thing in her life.”

“A loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend to many, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her,” the obituary said.

Kozlowski is survived by her husband of six years, their sons, her parents, her brother, her mother-in-law and father-in-law and various aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends and family can greet the family from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home on White Plains Road in Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to benefit her children’s education fund can be made through the funeral home.

Funeral services for Kozlowski are scheduled for Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Church in Bridgeport, followed by interment at St. Michael Cemetery in Stratford.
