Fairfield picked 6th in MAAC women’s soccer
EDISON, N.J. - The reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference co-rookie of the year Alex Madden was selected on the preseason all-conference team while the Fairfield University women’s soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll released Monday.
“I think the selection of sixth is about right because that’s about where we finished last year,” Coach David Barrett said. “We’ve got plenty to prove to go from that position. It gives us motivation to get better and we’ll see if we can improve from what the coaches think of us at the start of the season.”
The Stags will begin their first season under Barrett when the squad opens their campaign at LIU Brooklyn on Friday at 11 a.m. The Stags finished seventh in the conference last season with a 4-5-1 league mark.
Madden, who became the first Stag since 2007 to win a MAAC rookie of the year award, was Fairfield’s lone representative on the conference’s preseason squad. The striker led the Stags with seven goals and 14 points during her rookie season, which also featured a team-high three game-winning tallies.
“I’m pleased for Alex to get some recognition,” Barrett said. “Obviously she had a great first year and we’re hoping that she is able to improve on her performances from her first year and continue to grow as a player in 2018.”
Two-time conference champions Monmouth were the unanimous favorite in the preseason poll, receiving all 11 first-place votes. Quinnipiac, Siena, and Manhattan rounded out the top-four in the poll with each school earning 90 or more points. Rider, Fairfield, Marist, Niagara, Canisius, Iona, and Saint Peter’s finished the rest of the poll.
Monmouth also has the preseason player of the year in forward Madie Gibson.
