Petro's grand slam gives Westport win over Fairfield National

TRUMBULL -- The Westport Little League team didn't need to make any contact to load the bases in a tie game in the top of the sixth inning against Fairfield National on Tuesday at Unity Field.

Two walks and a hit batter set the stage for Adam Petro, and the No. 3 hitter hooked a pitch over the left field fence that stayed fair long enough to extend Westport's summer.

Petro's grand slam broke a 3-3 tie and helped send Westport to a 7-4 win over Fairfield National. The defeat ended Fairfield National's season while Westport (4-2) will face the loser of Wednesday night's Monroe/Fairfield American game on Friday night at 7:30.

"Any time you cap off a big rally with a grand slam, that was just fun to watch," Westport coach Andy Thompson said. "The boys were hungry from the beginning of the game; we got beat by them last time (10-4 in pool play June 25) and we wanted to come out here and win."

Nick Giacomazza led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to give National (4-2) hope. Two more batters reached base after one out was recorded, which brought the tying run to the plate. Westport's Nick Rossi retired the final two batters to end the threat.

"These guys never go down without a fight," National coach Dr. Brad Weinstein. "No matter what the score is, they fight. They battled until the end."

Will Eichhorn pitched 4 1/3 innings for Westport and also went 4-for-4 at the plate. Eichhorn fouled a pitch off his leg in the first inning but remained in the game.

"That's a gutty performance," Thompson said. "He gutted out a strong performance pitching and hitting as well. He even doubted whether or not to go up in the last inning, but obviously he contributed and got on base."

Kevin Rabacs went 3-for-3 with a walk and also made an outstanding catch in right field that prevented an extra base hit. Nick Parisi hit a two-run homer for National in the bottom of the first to cut Westport's early lead to 3-2.

The score remained the same until the fifth inning when National tied the game on an RBI single by Chris Saladin. National had runners on the corners with two outs but couldn't break the deadlock.

"We had the top of the order up and runners in scoring position; you expect to take the lead," Weinstein said. "The fact that we tied it up was good, but we wanted more."

The loss capped a disappointing 24 hours for National, which went 4-0 in pool play. National lost 4-3 to Monroe on Monday.

"Baseball is a humbling sport," Weinstein said. "One day you're the hero, the next day you're the goat."
