Impostors seek donations to volunteer fire depts. in new scam

A new scam targeting supporters of local volunteer fire departments has honed in on towns in Fairfield and New Haven counties.

Volunteer fire departments from multiple municipalities, including Trumbull, Monroe and Oxford, are warning that phone scammers have hatched a new scheme to solicit money from residents by pretending to fundraise for local volunteer firefighters.

“We have received information that someone is calling and identifying themselves as a representative of a local volunteer fire department. The caller then asks for your support and for monetary donations over the phone,” said Shawn Roof, company president of the Trumbull Volunteer Fire Company 1.

Fire officials have reported that caller IDs from scam calls have shown up as “VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS” or “FIRST RESPONDERS.” Roof said that in Trumbull residents have received calls from the number 475-219-2354.

Departments reminded residents that volunteer departments do not fundraise through telephone calls.

“Please do not give card numbers or send any money to these people even if the caller ID even states ‘Volunteer Fire Department.’ If you do wish to donate to the fire companies, we encourage you to come to our events or mail in donations to our address,” wrote Oxford Fire and Rescue on their official Twitter account.

Residents contacted by such a phone scam are encouraged to contact their local police departments.
